My answer to that is, why wouldn't you? Getting married is one of the happiest days of many people's lives. Being married is often one of the most rewarding relationships you can have. As much as those two statements are true, the harsh reality is that marriage can also be hard. I believe that premarital therapy can help set you up for success by providing you both tools to have at the ready when you hit a little bump in the road. It's kinda like going on a long road trip, if you have to stop and change a tire but don't have a spare, a jack or tire iron, it's gonna be pretty hard to change the tire. If before you get married, you have an idea about how to communicate more effectively, what each other's spending looks like, and how you feel about sharing roles, then those bumps won't derail you as much.
Whenever two people become engaged that typically is not when they first decide they want to be married to each other. Often it can be a lengthy process to be to the point of getting engaged. I believe that seeking premarital therapy prior to becoming engaged has the potential to save a lot of heartache and a lot of money. Think about it for a moment, if you are engaged, that means a ring has been purchased, deposits have been put down, and save the dates have been mailed. What if during premarital therapy something comes up that proves to be challenging to work through? With all of that financial and emotional investment it may be harder to be honest with yourselves and others versus had you not spent any money or put out expectations for others.
I use an assessment called Prepare. I find it to be beneficial in helping soon to be newlyweds navigate their journey to being married. There is a $35 fee for administering this assessment which goes directly to PREPARE/ENRICH.
I offer a couple of different options for premarital therapy. Standalone premarital sessions are $150. I also offer premarital packages that include 5 premarital sessions, 1 post-ceremony check in session, and the Prepare assessment all for $600 total. If you choose the premarital package it must be paid in full at the time of the first premarital therapy appointment.
